Investor's Journal is a diary focused strictly on investments and personal finance issues, primarily from a contrarian and retiree point of view. Follow along with an average guy's failures and successes as he learns, by trial and error, the fine art of value investing.

7/24/22-Since the last entry (6/8/22), with the market down significantly so far this year I have recently found a number of attractive securities, off their 52-week highs and, from my perspective, also at prices that make them relative bargains. I still like some of the basic ETFs which, as noted in the entry last month, have over time an excellent chance of beating the major market indexes. Nonetheless, I also want to take advantage of new opportunities among individual stocks. Accordingly, there have been more than the usual number of assets replaced in our basic 25 holdings. Shares of these were redeemed: AWF; BDN; BGFV; BHK; BILL; CEFS; EDV; EQTIX; GOGL; HMY; MNDY; PCEF; S; SNOW; and ZS. Shares of these were purchased: ABNB; APA; BEAM; BWA; DKS; ILMN; ITOS; MRO; NET; PYPL; QQEW; RSP; TEAM; VIR; and ZBRA. The resulting revised 25 holdings are as follows: AAPL; ABNB; APA; BEAM; BWA; DDOG; DKS; ILMN; ITOS; MRO; NET; PYPL; QQEW; RGR; RIO; RSP; TEAM; VBR; VIOO; VIR; VOO; VTV; WU; XLV; and ZBRA.

Our portfolio is as yet on track to provide total dividends this year of at least $58,320. (As earlier indicated, our goal for portfolio dividends is, from their latest base of $50,000 in 2020, to assure an annual 8% or better increase.)

Liquid assets are down $94,963, or 5.21%, since 6/8 and now stand at $1,728,002. Assets of all kinds (real estate, equities, collectibles, etc.) are down 11.71%, or $308,195, since the end of last year. As of today, the total is $2,323,742.

Speaking of ETFs that have a decent chance together of beating the S&P 500 or other major indexes, I like the following from our basic 25 holdings: QQEW; RSP; VBR; VIOO; VOO; VTV; and XLV. As a group, on average they are currently 16.06% below their 52-week highs.

Disclaimer and Disclosure Statement
Much as I'd love it to be otherwise, I receive no payment of any kind for disseminating investment information unless, by some fluke, millions of folks, on the strength of these entries, start buying shares of stock I own, a possibility only slightly less likely than our being destroyed by a large meteorite. Do not follow any suggestions made in Investor's Journal as if I were a professional.

Neither I nor Investor's Journal will be responsible for losses by anyone who obtained ideas from this site.

This diary is intended for personal interest and general information only. You are advised to do your own research (as well as to consult highly compensated professionals) before spending money on anything.

I know of no reason anyone should take my financial musings seriously. At best I am a dedicated amateur providing a bit of investment-related insight and entertainment, at worst an amusing diversion.

My wife, Fran, and I may at times own shares of some of the assets mentioned here. But neither of us receive any benefit from reference to them, unless you count the mutual misery when we get it wrong, or the opportunity to gloat when we get it right.
